Support Student Comfort with an Ergonomic Desk and Chair

What Is Ergonomics and Why Is It Important?

Ergonomics is a science of designing furniture and environments that accommodate the physical human body and its motion. In a classroom setting, if we practice ergonomics it means we should select school desks and chairs that promote the natural curvature of the spine, allow children’s feet to rest comfortably on the floor, and accommodate their growth with sit-to-stand desks or adjustable chairs as the children physically grow.

Bad posture, which is often caused by fixed-height (or poorly-designed) student chairs is often the cause of cracks and cavities in the short-lived comfort we give our learners. The discomfort also affects low back pain, digestive issues, and a variety of other circulatory problems. Discomfort can unleash our less than pleasant coping mechanisms, which causes unnecessary breaks in our learning environment. Eventually, violating our students’ ability to tolerate discomfort will lead to lowered attention, decreased participation, and poor learning (or poor grades) in the long run.

When We Don’t Change Our Furniture

In America, we still see traditional hard, flat chairs and non-adjustable desks in way too many classrooms. Very often you see students shuffling and/or wiggling in the classroom; students getting up more than they need to; students being distracted… when what is really happening is they are just plain uncomfortable. All of this behavior interrupts learning in some capacity; we interrupt an entire room of students because they are comfortably miserable (and they are forced to tolerate it or disrupt their peers in some way). Worse yet, the uncomfortable students frequently lose focus, as they tolerate enduring discomfort often affects a child’s mood and motivation, which is functional for a learning environment.

Benefits of an Ergonomics Desk and Chair

Happy, comfortable students do report lower discomfort levels, which means they also:

• Have a better ability to focus because they don’t have physical distractions due to pain

• Have improved levels of pain in the back, neck and shoulders – even young bodies

• Have school furniture which can be adjusted for size and/or need

• Will want to engage in and participate in the classroom community

What to Look for in Ergonomic Furniture

Quality ergonomic chairs/desks should provide:

• Adjustable desk and chair height.

• Chairs should have soft seatbacks which support the body.

• Fabric should be durable but not uncomfortable.

• Sturdy and durable for everyday student use.
